Explanation of Water Quality ANSI/NSF Testing Protocols
ANSI/NSF Test
Protocol 42 (Chlorine, Odor &
Taste) Standard #42.
A filter cartridge, or other form of filter media, must
remove +95% of 2.0 mg/L solution of free chlorine (at both
acidic and basic pH Range) for a minimum of 1500 gallons.
The flow rate for a 10 inch canister is 0.60 gpm. The filter
cartridge must also remove sulfides, additional smells and
metallic taste. Kold Ster-Il ® offers a carbon cartridge
capable of 3,000 gallons minimum chlorine (2.0 mg/L concentration
neutralization under NSF Standard 42.
ANSI/NSF Test Protocol 53 Volatile Organic Chemicals/THM's
(Chloroform surrogate test) Standard 53. A filter cartridge,
or other form of filter media, must remove 74% or more to
produce a filtrate containing not more than 0,100 mg/l or
100 µg/l of chloroform detected Gas Chromatograph
with a Electron Capture Detector. Our Kold Ster-il®
system provides 12 molecular absorption discs 74% reduction
of 347 µg/L Chloroform to 90 µg/L then our 0.50
µm carbon filter provides an 82+% reduction of any
residual Chloroform (approved under NSF Standard 53b).
ANSI/NSF Test Protocol 53b
Heavy Metals (Lead, Mercury, Cadmium) Standard #53b. A filter
cartridge, or other form of filter media, must remove lead,
mercury and cadmium from potable water under acidic and
basic pH Ranges. Our Kold Ster-il® sorbed 62.45% lead,
63.27% cadmium and 63.47% mercury at 5.90 pH and 7.75 ph
flowing 3.78gpm (620 % faster than the Standard 0.60 gpm
required flow rate). Next our 0.50µm carbon filter
is filled with a ceramic molecular sieve that sorbs 96%
of lead, 91% of cadmium and 93% of mercury under ANSI/NSF
Standard53b. Method of Analysis: Atomic Absorption w/Graphite
furnace under EPA Methods.
ANSI/NSF Test Protocol 63 Health & Safety related
to extractables. Standard #63
Each Type of Plastic Hardware, end caps, glues and filter
media must be exposed separately to ultrapure water i.e.
ASTM Type I 18.0 megohm/cm (0.56µS/cm) for a minimum
of 1 hour in a sealed glass or teflon container. Samples
are drawn through from the sealed container into the purge
& trap of Fas Chromatagraph with an Electron Capture
Detector for Volatile Organic Chemical Analysis. Certain
other tests may be required, dependent upon materials of
construction, types of glues and sealants, and filter media
selected. These tests can be for radioactivity (carbons)
heavy metals (zeolites and other minerals) and pesticides.
US-EPA "Guide Standard and
Protocol for Testing Microbiological Purifers"
Our Kold Ster-il ® offers a 0.20 Filter Bag capable
of 99.999% reduction of Cryptosporidium parvum cysts and
0.50µm Carbon Cartridge capable of greater than 99.9%
reduction tested according to the Standard & Protocol.
Giardia & Cryptosporidium parum cysts can cause serious
illness or death in immune suppressed individuals caused
by disease or chemotherapy.
